Name's prints

Installation "Les enfants du paradis" (children of paradise), 2008

The search for a surname for a new born child is a very important process. For the child should feel comfortable with its name. The surname of a person becomes a synonyma for its whole personality.

Switzerland is seen by most citizens of other countries as a sort of paradise (even if it is not so). Such a rich country! Switzerland is a famous holiday resort and is a favourite immigration-destination. At the same time the title makes a link to the so-called film of 1945.

The department of statistics of the state published the mostly given first names of children in Switzerland. Some of these names I used for this installation and developed name's signs out of them (deeper information about my motivation and the technique you can find under "magic squares" 1995-2006 page 10). The squared back-ground shows the processed photography of a part of a sycamore's bark. All images of the installation together show a section of the sycamore's bark.

I developed images of the following 30 first names printed on canvas: Anna, Luca, Lara, Noah, Laura, Daniele, Leonie, Joël, Julia, Alessandro, Léa, Nico, Emma, Samuel, Julie, Mattia, Sofia, Nathan, Giulia, Leo, Martina, Jan, Jasmin, Simon, Lorena, Tim, Sarah, Jonas, Eva, Thomas.

Name's prints, couple prints, famili portraits

Since 2008

The newest version of a couple's print is like a dance in sequences. The background, a processed photograph is the stage where the dance is shown. The names' symbols show their fullest beauty. When a child is born, it receives a first name from its parents and in the course of time it becomes one with this name. The focus here is on this process of developing a personality.

Since 2003

The first name is the base for a computer-calligraphy. The colour gradient in the background stands for the individuality of the person and is chosen by the person itself.

The images that are part of a family portrait make a processed colour gradient together in the background. There is a ribbon, an axis, a time axis in the background.

In the case of couple prints, I reflect the designs of the two names and place them either positive and dark grey or in a coloured black in the foreground or else inverted and light grey in the back ground, thus showing the different sides to each personality. The large couple prints show the couple in the middle and to the left and right of it the two individuals who have formed a couple. The colours in the background correspond to the couple's two favourite colours.
