Artist's books

Wer gerne eine Reise tut... (Who ever likes to go on a trip...) 2011 (Small edition)

I overworked the former version that was spiral bound and printed with a laser printer. I will realise the new version as an inkjet-print and will work it out as a book consisting of two volumes that are bound and folded. I sent it to an international competition and will use the prize sum (if there will be one for me) for the finishing of the issue of 40. (Further information to this book you will find below.)

Graphic Rolls

I wanted to show several Graphic Rolls at the Petöfi Irodalmi Mùzeum in Budapest. As indicated below, they should suit to the theme 'bridges'.

Here I was looking for special Coulours' combinations such as the one with a similar blue (as Yves Klein used it) and brown. Or bright red-green-yellow. Or completely different ones. Again I used photographs I took in China.

Poesie-Album (Friendship book), 2010

Friendship-book Poesie-Album (Friendship-book), 2010

A Member of the Basle Forum Artists' books proposed to develop friendship books for the exhibition in Totengässlein. I considered the idee being pritty but I modified it as follows: My first artistic friendship book should contain only sections of my artist's book "Wer gerne eine Reise tut..." (Who ever likes to go on a tour...), 2009. I inserted free space for thoughts of the owner's friends. This book, too, is hold together by small spirals.

Du und ich (You and I), Mit dir (With you), Im May (In May) and ohne Titel (Untitled), 2010

I like leporellos. I developed some leporellos in a very easy way. They are hold together with small spirals. They consist of prints on both sides of cardboard. They give different answers to the text of Erich Fried taken for the graphic roll Was es ist (What it is), 2010. The texts consist of slices of monologues directed to an unvisible opposite, who tries to slip away all the time. I developed the books in a larger and a smaller format as there exists the "true love" and the "hanky-panky".

Was es ist (What it is), 2010

In a poetry-book I found Erich Frieds beatiful text about love. I knew at once: This poem is suitable to the theme "bridges" we found for the two exhibitions one in Totengässlein, Basle and the other in Pedöfi Irodalmi Mùzeum, Budapest. I combined the text to several photographs combined together in different layers from my trip to China. This time I used a photograph of the cog ralway to the peak (Hong Kong) besides others. This graphic roll was the initializing work for the leporellos above mentioned.

"Wer gerne eine Reise tut..." (Who ever likes to go on a trip...) 2009

Wer gerne eine Reise tut... Wer gerne eine Reise tut... , 2009

Since 2006 I am working on a series of prints with the title „transparencies". And since the beginning I thougt of making an artist's book with detail flashes of them (18).

Isabelle Schaub from Basle (Switzerland) helped me to find the most interesting text fragments corresponding to a series of dualities (antipodes) I was thinking over.

On a trip through China I collected further images and aspects and the different moods of this huge country influenced me strongly. China is arriving in modern times and it seems that there is an important change coming, as it is with the whole world in the view of such a huge finance crisis based on the acting of western finance gamblers. In shortest time we lost the way of growth and nearly fixed rising incomes and jumped into the lowest grounds . Specialists asked if the rezession is coming - yes or no - when it fixed itself suddenly as the realistic scenario in a lot of brains. Everybody is panic. Everything is quaking. The first jobs are lost. Investments are lost. Balance has gone.

In such a situation we begin to look after the very important. The search for growth and money has come to an end. We ask ourselves what we can rely on. What is worthy today what was solid yesterday? What makes us human beings?

We remember our culture. The solid worths of mankind are shown in new aspects here and interpreted in new correspondence. Everything has already existed before. Even if history does not repeat exactly. Our search for youth has come to an end. This crisis has a lot to do with this. Many of us do not know that each crisis is a new chance, too. Our parents and grand-parents can help us in these times. They know other bad times. The different generations should help one another. The big knowledge of the former generation can help and inspire the younger one, but it also can stop them. It is to find the right mix.

This book should be an antipode to the actual crises. It shows the chaotic aspects that are around us and adds it to fragments taken out of the former and the actual literature. My images from the series "transparencies" are as fragile as the balanced system of the finance world. They connect towns and countryside, human beings and plants or the sky and earth. The lines take the rythme of flying impressions on a journey through life as makes the view from a rolling train. The vertical and diagonal lines make you think on tracks and railroads. The world is looking for a new turning.

The text fragments from other authors are printed upside-down on the japanese paper and it is not so easily visable. They are added to hand-made copy of a Bach-melody (melody for flute). The melody and the text fragments correspond some times and some times they make visable new aspects of the texts, the melody and the images. Some times life is a complex thing. Many ways lead us through difficult and strange times. We find in the end our own personality. Everything is connected to other things, reality comes to fiction and future is the past.

"Aus der Traum" (From/out of the dream), 2006

Dreams are fantasies. That is what a poem says. But dreams have a world on their own, a special “reality”. They can enrich, disturb or make us happy. The collected text-fragments are dream-slivers,fragments to remember strong moments full of thoughts. They report moments of happiness, sadness, absurdity, irony, upside-downs, lightness.

At the same time, the short drawings have come to be done as the texts. To this firework of collected objects on the border between youth and adult I added some of my photographs. These photographs take up details of the text elements and drawings and connect them to other text elements and drawings.

24 texts and 24 drawings, laid in front of 24 processed photographs, were divided into 4 volumes:

- Blue is the colour of the sky, of the night, of the twilight, of the shadow. It is cool, emotionally neutral and stands for reflection, hence also for the dream.

- Red/orange and green are the most natural and interesting contrasts, they have big colour ranges and for me they symbolise the energy of life, of nature.

- White and beige are relaxed and cool, light as the summer but evoking at the same time the coldness of winter. They allow room for speculation and interpretation and are also neutral.

- Red, lilac and violet are concentrated, heavy and dominant. They always appear in the foreground and are dynamic and static at the same time.

The texts and drawings are from the years 1984 to 1991; the photographs from 2001 to 2005.

"Von zehn bis achtzehn - ein magisches Quadrat" (from ten to eighteen - a magic square), 2004 and "Von eins bis neun - ein magisches Quadrat" (from one to nine - a magic square), 2002

"Von zehn bis achtzehn - ein magisches Quadrat" (from ten to eighteen - a magic square)

Since 2001, I thought of presenting a magic square as an object. In 2003, I picked up the idea of putting a magic square between acrylic panels, making them pivotable and realising the whole "Paravent" in acrylic glass.
Transparency was a topic in my first artist's book. Now I wanted to develop the number surfaces in transparencies. I chose coloured greys and reduced the colour to fine lines around the numbers. The poems are again a summary of the number's significations (17) and (20).

"Von einsbis neun- ein magisches Quadrat" (from oneto nine- a magic square)

During my silk-screening-work at the School of Design, Basle, I developed number surfaces to underlay the computer calligraphies. That way it was possible to show people which number each sign stands for. I used bright colours for the number surfaces in the background and nearly black for the computer calligraphy in front.

I had the idea of bringing the significations of the numbers from one to nine into poems (17) and of printing these texts as serigraphy on transparent Japan paper. I only made four of these books (21). Later I developed a smaller paperback version of this artist's book, because a lot of people asked me for a copy.
